@JesseBAndersen I did couple of tests and found mpeg2 is only 18% CPU while MP4 is 45%. Also I was able to play mpeg2 1080i at 30fps (!) so seems it has HW support. Not saying it’s practical if most content is MP4 but if you want to max battery life then re-encoding is useful. For MP4/VC1 720p I got best results so far with CoreCodec.

  • Luke48 says:

@JesseBAndersen Have you tested mpeg-2? HW support should be in the N470 GMA processor (no Crystal HD card needed). It may not be interesting for downloads but for 720p movies it would save you battery life in theory.

  • JesseBAndersen says:

@Luke48 I removed the Crystal HD card on my S10-3T so I wouldn’t be able to test any of that. I found that it’s just better not to play anything above 720p.

  • Luke48 says:

The N470 supposedly has MPEG-2 support so would be interesting to re-encode and see if that reduces CPU and extends battery life.

Also I think Crystal card supports WMVHD but it has to be VC1 (WMV9 Advanced Profile) and those WMVHD demo video’s are pretty old and probably don’t use that video codec.

But given the screen resolution I don’t see a need for full HD playback unless you want to avoid re-encoding if no 720p is available.

  • JesseBAndersen says:

@pmow It’s quite a bit of work to get the card installed. I have another video that shows HD movies on the S10-3T without the Crystal HD card. Make sure to check it.

  • pmow says:

After seeing your HD playback video, I am not sure its worth it to get the broadcom chip installed. The SD Sufi card is b only, which has an 11mbit limit.

  • JesseBAndersen says:

@pmow I didn’t know about the Wifi SD Card. I will have to check it out because this would solve the whole bios flashing of the white list. I know that jfrakes has both the Crystal HD and another wifi card working (again it requires bios flashing). I’m not sure how the SD Card would be compared to the normal wifi cards when it comes to range, but I assume it would also be less. I’ll see if Sandisk can send me a sample unit. Thanks!

Hi Jesse, love your videos. It actually convinced me to get one, and I’m following your RSS of course. One thing I thought of was that with the Broadcom card in, you cannot access the Wifi. Rather than using a USB wifi card, have you ever tried an SD card with Wifi? Sandisk makes one, and would be even tinier than a usb, and would take up a slot! “Sandisk Connect Wi-Fi SD Card” only 802.11b though.
